What is a Marketing Strategy…Really?

We marketers love to overcomplicate and shake things up with spicy acronyms.

In the simplest of terms, a marketing strategy is:

  • Doing the right things

  • In the right order

  • At the right time

  • For the right people

That’s really it.

Think of your marketing strategy as your north star.

Strategy outlines your brand as a whole, including your business goals, mission, vision, and values. It also needs to have a decent amount of information on who your dream customer is and how you’re going to reach them.

A good marketing strategy will match business goals with step-by-step marketing tactics to crush said goals. It should also take into account what customers are focused on during different seasons (or quarters).

Unless you’re a major organization, you’re probably not looking for a massive 30-page odyssey. Most small businesses can get away with a one-sheet Lean Canvas model or a 6-10 page condensed marketing strategy (whether you throw in PESTLE and SWOT is up to you). You can go as deep as you want or as your business needs.

Quick reference points to keep your team on track.

When creating a strategy, always start with your customer. Put yourself in their shoes to find out who they are, what they care about and get to understand their current purchasing behaviour.

Outline your company details and brand messaging that speaks directly to the problem you are solving for them. How can you pierce their heart?

Sprinkle in your business goals.

Lay out the tactics that establish connections to your customer base.

This is just the simplified version, but there’s actually a lot more baked into that pie. So, stick around for more tips.
