What is a marketing strategy?

A marketing strategy is your north star. An easy-to-reference document that keeps you and your team on track.

In the simplest of terms, a marketing strategy is:

1. Doing the right things
2. In the right order
3. At the right time
4. For the right people

That’s really it.

Think of it as your north star. It outlines your brand as a whole, including your business goals, mission, vision, and values. It also needs to have a decent amount of information on who your dream customer is and how you’re going to reach them.

A good marketing strategy will match business goals with step-by-step marketing tactics to crush those goals. It should also take into account what customers are focused on during different seasons (or quarters).

Unless you’re a major organization, you’re probably not looking for a massive 30-page odyssey. Most small businesses can get away with a one-sheet Lean Canvas model or a 6-10 page condensed marketing strategy.

Whether you add in the PESTLE and SWOT analysis is up to you.

All that to say, marketing strategies just need to be quick reference points that keep your team on track.

When creating a strategy, always start with your customer. Know who they are, what they care about and what their current purchasing behaviour is.

Start with your customer.

Outline your company details and brand messaging that speaks directly to the problem you are solving for them.

Sprinkle in your business goals.

Lay out the tactics that help you crush them.

This is just the simplified version, but there’s actually a lot more baked into that pie. So, stick around for more tips.

Alternatively, if creating a marketing strategy is one of your business goals, we can help you build one.

Until next time,

Caley
